How to save and monitor power usage in Linux with PowerTop


Requirements:

  • Linux kernel 2.6.21 or newer

  • Intel Processor

Installation:

download PowerTop.

Set it up with these commands in the Terminal:


tar -zxf powertop-1.9.tar.gz
cd powertop-1.9
make
make install
sudo powertop

Saving Power:

PowerTop will monitor and make suggestions on how to save power, and it can create hotkeys to execute certain commands.

What's the biggest power hog?

It turns out that, among other commonly used programs, FireFox is the biggest power hog, and with every addon you have installed and enabled, more power is used. So think twice when installing worthless addons!
